ACADEMIC REGULATIONS GOVERNING AWARD OF DIPLOMA AND CERTIFICATE GRADING OF STUDENTS’ RESULTS The performance of a student in a semester will be reported by the Grade Point Average (GPA) while the overall performance at the end of a session (and/or at any point in his study programme) will be reported by the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The classification of a diploma or certificate shall be determined by the final Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). CUMULATIVE OF GPA and CGPA Letter grades and grade points shall be derived from the actual percentage score obtained in a given course as follows: Percentage Score Letter Grade Grade Point 70-100 A 5 60-69 B 4 50-59 C 3 45-49 D 2 40-44 E 1 00-39 F 0 Incomplete I A Weighted Grade Point shall be determined for the performance in each course by multiplying the grade point obtained in the course by the credit load of the course except that all incomplete courses shall be ignored. A GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) A Grade Point Average (GPA) shall be calculated for a semester by adding up the weighted grade points obtained in all the courses offered in that semester and dividing the sum by the total value of the credits of all the courses, except those classified as incomplete. A CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA) A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) shall be calculated by adding the weighted grade points obtained in all the courses offered by a student up to the end of a given session (and/or up to a point in a student’s programmes) and dividing sum by the total value of the credits of all the courses, ignoring those of incomplete course.
GRADE PASS FOR FURTHER STUDIES: Certificate students who wish to use the results of College programme for entry into Diploma Programme or Diploma students who wish to use the results for entry into a Degree Programme of any University must obtain at least a Merit i.e. GRADE ‘C’. Diploma and Certificate shall be graded through the final CGPA as follows: 4-50 - 5.00 Distinction 3-50 - 4.49 Credit 2-40 - 3.49 Merit 1-00 - 2.39 Pass 0-00 - 0.99 Fail Students must pass all courses they registered for to enable them qualify for the award of certificate, Diploma. The transcripts of student awarded Diploma and Certificate shall show the letter grades and weighted grade point obtained in each course, the GPA for each Semester and the final CGPA as calculated in the calculation of GP and CGPA. The period for any student for a Diploma or Certificate shall not exceed the minimum number of years by more than two semesters. If a student is required to withdraw from study in a programme, he shall not be re-admitted to a programme of study in any other school of the College except with the express approval of the College and Board of Examiners or the Provost. NOTIFICATION OF EXAMINATION RESULTS (1) No results of examinations may normally be announced until after they have been approved by the College Board of Examiners. However, the Chairman of the Board may give approval in advance for the earlier announcement of results on a provisional basis and subject to the Board’s approval, to be made in cases where special urgency exists. (2) The results of Semester Examinations for all levels except final year should be released after the approval of the College Board of Examiners. (3) Unless otherwise approved by the College Board of Examiners, written statements of first semester results shall not be issued to a student or other authorized person. (4) At other times Deans and Heads of Departments may make known to students, either verbally or by posting lists in a public place within the College area, the letter grades which they have obtained in their courses. (5) After the College Board of Examiners has approved the results of an examination, report of each session’s performance, (except the final "classified" performance) shall be issued to each student by the Department. Each report must be signed by the Head of the relevant Department. (6) Transcripts of results shall be signed by the Registrar or his representative and shall be in such form as may be approved from time to time. Numerical marks in individual courses shall not be given but letter grades and other variables specifies in paragraph 7.17 shall be shown. (7) One copy of a transcripat showing grades obtained will be given on request to a candidate on completion of his programme of study. Further copies will be issued subsequently on request and on payment of a prescribed fee to the College. Each page must be individually signed and stamped as in section 7.2.4. (8) Certificates of the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates shall show the classification obtained. (9) Certificates of the award of degrees, diplomas or certificates approved by the Academic Board shall be sealed with the Common seal of the College and signed by the Provost and the Registrar. REPEAT AND PROBATION (1) A student can repeat failed courses in the following session or semester provided it is offered by the Department and the student can schedule his or her time table accordingly. (2) A student whose CGPA is below 1.00 at the end of any session will be placed on academic probation for one session to enable him up grade his CGPA to at least 1.00. Such a student shall be informed of his status by the school and a copy of the notice should be sent to the Examination office. WITHDRAWAL Withdrawal from the College shall be recommended by the school Board to the College Board of Examiners on any of the following grounds. (1) Failure to attain the required standard in English within two academic sessions from admission into level I or within an academic session from admission into level II. (2) Failure to obtain a CGPA of at least 1.00 after a probation period. (3) Failure to attend classes for a period which exceeds 30 consecutive days except upon certified medical grounds. (4) Failure to complete the stated requirements for the award of a degree, diploma or certificate within the maximum number of semesters laid down for the programme. (5) Failure to sit for the entire semester examination without any admissible reason. (6) Failure to satisfy College Regulations. If a student is required to withdraw from study in a programme he may seek approval of College Board of Examiners to apply for a transfer to another programme within the College.
